But McCarthy said that next week she plans to introduce an assault weapons ban - legislation that is anathema to the NRA

The same woman introduces the same bill every year.

Let's see how many co-sponsors she can find. And let's see if any of them are different from the same group that always calls for this stuff.

We shouldn't go to sleep but don't get excited yet!

So it begins.

I am too young to really remember the last AWB, did it also make certain capacity mags illegal to sell and produce? Say 30 rd AK and AR mags?

Yes, no newly manufactured mags above 10 rounds could be sold. Hi-cap mags made before Sept. 1994 were still legal to buy and sell but cost a lot.

Para-Ordnance high capacity mags were selling for $70-90 each.

being anti-gun is more counterproductive to their cause than anything... Obama being anti-gun has done more for the proliferation of guns/ammuntion than any pro-gun organization could ever hope to achieve.

They simply do not have the support (for now) to push an AWB through, in congress or with the masses.

Particularly with the climate changing in that arena.

""Assault weapon ban???"...THE SOONER THE BETTER!!!

THEY SHOULD ONLY ALLOW THE SALE OF DEFENSIVE WEAPONS... like AK-47's... 45ACP's handguns, 9MM pistols and carbines, 308's... ya know... the stuff to keep you safe from "assault" weapon users!

Oh Yea! I would consider a .50 BMG "defensive".. but, alas I can't afford one... sigh!

You mean like they didn't have the support for the No Bankster Left Behind bill last October?

There will be some event, then they will pass whatever as an emergency measure. It's their MO.

hence (for now).

IMO the soonest we'll see any huge push will be after the 2010 elections. My guess is that the democrats will widen the gap giving them a better chance to push legislation through.

I think we should be allowed to own defensive weapons to protect ourselves from the government. Just like what the founders believed.

It's worth noting that the current swine flu pandemic has technically put the US in a state of emergency. That opens the doors for weapons bans/gun grabs without the need for congress to pass legislation based on the "emergency powers" given to the executive branch.

Even if they don't use that approach, I'd be watching out for a back-door ban for the very reasons stated above regarding the lack of popular support. Don't forget that this administration doesn't like to "waste a good crisis."

IIRC, the feds have been operating under a permanent "state of emergency" since 1930 something... this is what allegedly gives the president the authority to legislate through executive orders. The fact that there is yet another one on the books doesn't particularly matter, it doesn't give the federal government any more authority than they had already taken.

This is one type of McCarthyism I certainly do not like. Creepy, old, dried-up busy-body witch.

She can try all she wants. She will never look good when compared against Kirsten Gillibrand!

You decide:

NRA Rating of A

VS This:

(Warning!!! Not For The Faint Of Heart)

http://carolynmccarthy.house.gov/

NRA Rating of F

Thats the point, she has flip-flopped:

"As the junior senator from New York, the upstate Democrat has undergone a transformation, moving quickly in the past three months away from her House record that won the NRA's top rating while remaining a supporter of Second Amendment rights to gun ownership."

They are saying she will probably vote for the ban once it is introduced.
